A Mentor is an experienced and trusted Advisor.

What is mentoring?

Some Definitions

  • A one-to-one relationship which provides support, guidance and assistance
  • The process by which a person shares his or her personal knowledge, skills and experience.
  • A method of working together to achieve agreed goals.

An Outline

Mentoring is a process providing help, support and guidance to raise attainment and to develop personal skills, and can be very powerful in developing confidence and self-esteem in both parties.  Successful mentoring is determined by the commitment, interpersonal skills and creativity of both people involved.

Mentoring relations are unique partnerships shaped by the mentors talents and resources and the needs of the individual mentee.

For some time community groups and educationalists’ have used mentoring as an excellent personal development mechanism to motivate and broaden the horizons of individuals who might otherwise feel trapped or limited by their personal and/or community circumstances.

Anyone can volunteer to be a mentor irrespective of age, gender, social or ethnic background, career history or education.  An effective mentor, however, is one who has a genuine desire to make a positive difference to a persons development.
